Feature Athlete of the Week – Trevor DeVries – Hamilton District Christian High

Some of the athletes at Hamilton District Christian High do some amazing work, but don’t get a lot of exposure simply because the sports they play do not have competitions on our campus.  Trevor DeVries is one of those athletes. Trevor has been an important part of our badminton team and hockey team for all 4 years of his high school career. In badminton, Trevor was always part of a mixed doubles team.  He showed fantastic dedication to the sport by committing to the practices, focussing on the court, and working hard at improving his skills and strategy. In hockey, Trevor was an outstanding goalie who kept the team in many games.  He showed outstanding positivity and leadership. Not only did Trevor play goalie for the men’s team, he also served as a goalie coach for the first ever HDCH Women’s Hockey team, working with the goalies to give expert advice. In all he does, Trevor shows sportsmanship, passion, and a pursuit of excellence.  Congrats Trevor and thanks for your contribution to HDCH Athletics!

2019-2020 Senior Football Champions: Westmount WildcatsHAMILTON (November 7, 2019) –  The Westmount Wildcats repeated as Hamilton public high school senior football champions on Thursday defeating the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs 24-17 in front of a full crowd at Waterdown District High School.

The win sends Westmount to the SOSSA Championship (Nov. 19)  while also punching their ticket the OFSAA Bowl Series held at McMaster University later this month.

Leading 24-10 in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats survived a scare late in the game when Sir Winston Churchill’s Justin Sshramayr scored on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Owen Hinsberger to put the game within one touchdown (24-17)..

Following that touchdown drive, the Bulldogs were able to recover an onside kick setting up a dramatic final few moments of the game.  Ultimately the Westmount defence was able to hang on and close out the game to secure their second straight city championship.

Wildcat quarterback Seth Cabezas threw for two touchdowns while rushing for another.  Cabeza’s rushing touchdown was a 33-yard score just 23 seconds into the fourth quarter putting the Wildcats up 24-10 at the time.

Westmount’s Stephan Pharand posted 10 points in the game, scoring on a 27-yard Cabezas touchdown pass and kicking the opening field goal.  Nate Bullock notched the other touchdown for the Wildcats catching a 22-yard Cabezas pass to make the score 17-3 in the third.

For the Bulldogs, Caleb Manning punched in a one yard run at 9:32 of the third quarter to set the score at 17-10 Westmount at the time.  Schramayr was the other touchdown scorer while Tyler Nold hit a 20-yard field goal in the game.

In the Chayka Bowl which was played prior to the Westmount / Churchill game, the Dundas Valley Gryphons defeated the Bernie Custis Tigers 16-3.

The Tigers opened the scoring with seven seconds remaining in the half on a Quinn Ramey 35-yard field goal.  That lead was short lived as Dundas Valley would managed a rouge as well as two touchdowns in the second half to secure the win.  Brennen Heeney and Quinn McGregor each scored touchdowns for Dundas Valley.

NOTES: The Wildcats are currently ranked No. 33 in the nation by Canadian Football Chat… Sir Winston Churchill made their first ever appearance in a championship game at the top level of the Hamilton public school league in tonight’s game; previously the Bulldogs played in a lower division, but the league has since changed formats to have all teams play within one level… Churchill were last year’s [2018-19] Chayka Bowl Champions… Bernie Custis made their first appearance in a bowl game playing for the Chayka Bowl against Dundas Valley in their inaugural season with the school having just opened its doors in September.

Olivia is a Grade 10 student who is a key member of OP’s emerging Wrestling Team. Olivia used her karate background as a foundation for Wrestling, which she started in Grade 8. Since then she has been incredibly dedicated and disciplined in her training and has excelled in the sport. She placed 7th at OFSAA last year, while competing against athletes who were much older and experienced. Olivia loves wrestling because she finds the community is very accepting. She is an extremely positive role model for her teammates. She consistently works to the best of her ability at every practice and encourages others to do the same. She uses her background to help others learn technique, is a leader on and off the mat and communicates effectively with her coaches and teammates. Olivia enjoys the challenge of running Cross-Country before the Wrestling season starts, as it allows her to develop a strong cardio base.

Olivia hopes to combine wrestling in some capacity with her Post-Secondary pursuits.

Each week HWDSB Athletics features a “Feature Athlete of the Week” randomly chosen from one of our secondary schools competing in HWIAC play.  Watch for this feature every Wednesday!

Looking back on 2019 as the year nears an end. Enjoy the highlights that we continue to feature this week.

Football (Senior): Westmount Strikes Gold at Provincial Bowl Game

The Westmount Wildcats were at the top of their game in 2019, defending their HWIAC championship and then taking home the National Capital Bowl game in the OFSAA Football Bowl Series rolling past Ottawa’s Ashbury College 44-6 on November 28, 2019.

Westmount put together a perfect 4-0 regular season earning first place in the gold division. They then edged Dundas Valley a 21-14 in the quarterfinals followed by a 27-7 win over Saltfleet in the semifinals to set up a battle of the undefeated against Sir Winston Churchill (5-0) in the championship game.

The HWIAC championship (On Nov. 7) was a battle of heavy weights with Westmount meeting Churchill at Waterdown District High School’s brand new artificial turf field under the lights with the snow falling at points in the game. The Wildcats held a 24-10 lead late in the game, but a late Bulldog touchdown and an onside kick set up a a dramatic final drive. Ultimately, Westmount was able to fend off Churchill taking the game 24-17 and earning their second straight HWIAC city football championship title.

That win, punched a ticket into the OFSAA Football Bowl Series hosted at McMaster with SOSSA holding two entries into the event.

Westmount is now the second Hamilton public school to have claimed an OFSAA bowl title since the event started in 2000. Westdale won the Northern Bowl 26-17 in 2015, and Hamilton public is now 2-2 in the bowl series. Waterdown and Sir Allan MacNab made the other two appearances.

Also of note, the second annual HWDSB Dennis Griffin Football All-Star game was contested at Waterdown on November 21, 2019. The event saw the top 80 student-athletes from public football teams in hamilton participate in front of fans and university scouts.

Touch Football (Girls): Ancaster Rolls to Third Title

The Ancaster Royals captured their third straight HWIAC girls touch football title topping Dundas Valley 14-0 in the championship game on September 27, 2019 at Mohawk Sports Park.

The Royals earned their way to the championship by not surrendering a single point in pool play finishing the round robin with a perfect 4-0 record. That set up a semifinal matchup against Waterdown who were able to break down the Ancaster defence putting up 13 points in the game. That wouldn’t be enough as the Royals put up 14 points offensively to head to the championship final with a 14-13 win.

Touch Football (Gr 9): Ancaster Rolls to Third Title

Dundas Valley took home the Grade 9 Boys Touch Football championship edging Glendale 7-6 on September 23, 2019 at Mohawk Sports Park.

The Gryphons finished pool play earlier in the day with a 3-1 record and advanced to the championship final on 13-0 win over defending champion Saltfleet setting up a rematch with Glendale who Dundas Valley was able to beat 7-0 in pool play.
