2017-18 Boys Hockey Champions: Waterdown Warriors
HAMILTON (March 1, 2018) – The Waterdown Warriors earned the 2017-18 Hamilton public boys hockey championship crown downing the Ancaster Royals 5-3 at Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena on Thursday afternoon.

Waterdown’s Mason Drury nabbed the game-winning goal on a breakaway, slipping behind the defenders after an expiring penalty in the second period. That goal turned out to be the game-winner to bring home the Warriors third boys hockey title in school history. The Warriors won titles in 2015-16 as well as 2006-07.

The game started with an explosion of offense with three goals being scored in the first five minutes (all coming just over a minute apart).

Waterdown’s Lucas Thompson opened the games scoring at 1:57 of the first period before Ancaster tied the game 43 seconds on a goal by Royals’ Evan Gibbs. The Warriors would regain the lead just 24 seconds later on an unassisted goal by Braden McCarles.

Waterdown made the score 3-1 when Ryan Downe netted a goal with under five to play in the first.

The game see-sawed back and forth from that point with Ancaster notching a goal in the second period on a penalty shot taken by Callum Macdonald. Minutes later Drury would net the game-winner.

Kyle Nash of Ancaster and Waterdown’s Zac Osborne scored the remaining two markers trading goals in the final period

Overall, Osborne and McCarles each registered two points in the win for Waterdown (a goal and an assist).

Waterdown and Ancaster both finished the regular season with identical 6-1-2 records; the teams tied twice and Waterdown earned a 4-0 victory late in the year to claim the No. 1 seed using the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The city championship victory advances Waterdown to the Southern Ontario Secondary School Association (SOSSA) ‘AAA’ boys hockey championship set for Tuesday (March 6) in St. Catharines, Ont. A championship win at SOSSA will qualify Waterdown for the provincial championship held March 21-23 also in St. Catharines.

Edward has been an exemplary athlete all four years at Guido de Bres Christian High School!  It began in grade 9 with a championship in grade 9 soccer and then a silver medal in volleyball. That same year he made the varsity soccer team and even cracked the starting lineup. With his contributions the team was silver medalists at OFSAA.  In grade 11, he was a big contributor to the soccer team that won gold at OFSAA in Windsor.  In volleyball, he was a starter with the volleyball team that won an HWIAC championship and the OCSSAA volleyball tournament that includes a large number of OFSAA bound teams.

Edward is a quiet leader, but his game speaks volumes.  He is very self-disciplined and works hard in every sport he plays.  This year, he added ice hockey to his repertoire and became a valuable asset to the team.  His commitment to academics parallels his commitment to sports.  He excels in math and hopes to continue his studies in university with a focus on mathematics.   He is excited about another soccer season – hoping to lead the boys soccer team to another championship.  He continues to take his successes in stride and he keeps a humble perspective and is often encouraging others to reach their full potential.  His coaches enjoy having him on their team and wish him well in his future endeavours.  Edward, you are very deserving of this recognition.

2017-18 Girls Developmental Hockey Champions: Sherwood SaintsHAMILTON (April 5, 2018) – Mackenzie York from the Sherwood Saints netted the game-winner on an end-to-end rush to lead the Saints past the Westdale Warriors 3-2 in the gold medal game of the HWDSB girls developmental hockey tournament held Thursday at Chedoke Twin Pad Arena.

With the score deadlocked at 2-2 and the game final minutes ticking off, York picked up the puck deep in her own zone and raced down the ice to earn Sherwood the tournament victory. The Saints finish the event undefeated, going 4-0 in round robin play and then adding a semi-final victory over the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs (3-1) before knocking off Westdale in the final.

Chloe McMurray and Breahna Bodo both scored for the Saints in the win with all of Sherwood’s goals coming without assists.

Westdale had their chances in the game and even held 2-1 lead heading into the final frame. After losing the lead with three minutes to play, they had several chances including the final minute with their goalie pulled; their attack fell short.

The Warriors’ Sarah Cushnie picked up two points on a goal and an assist in the tournament finale, while Maya Clapperton added the other goal in the loss.

The Warriors road to the final was a bit different than Sherwood Westdale finished round robin play with a 1-1-2 record to place third. They then beat Sir Allan MacNab 5-4 in a thriller to qualify for the gold medal game.

This is the second year of the Girls Development Hockey Tournament format which caps the HWDSB Athletics hockey season for the school year. Featured Athlete of the Week – Samuel Cooper – HDCH

The volleyball program at HDCH has been privileged to have Samuel Cooper as an athlete since he joined us in grade 9.  In grade 10, Samuel decided to try out for the senior team, and there was no question that he belonged there.  Not only did he belong, but he became the most intimidating hitter on our team. This past fall, in his grade 11 year, Samuel continued to be an intimidating hitter.  Since he can go through the block, around the block, or over the block, other teams find it hard to stop his attack. When we needed a kill, Samuel was the one we counted on.  This past year, Samuel also proved to be a dominant server and great passer. Trying to serve to him was not a good way of keeping our team out of system. This past year, Samuel was a big part of our senior boys volleyball team experiencing much success and winning a bronze medal at OFSAA.  Along with his ability, Samuel shows great sportsmanship when he plays; he shows honour and respect for his teammates, opponents, coaches and referees. Outside of our team, Samuel shows a commitment to, and a love for, the game of volleyball. He loves to learn the game, watch the game, play the game and train his body to become better at it.  He will often talk about how he admires the abilities of high level volleyball players that he watches. It is a joy to watch Samuel play and compete for HDCH Athletics, and we look forward to his contributions in the future!
