Division-II Championship: a show of sportsmanship

HAMILTON (November 2, 2017) – The Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs held on to claim their first football title since the 1992-93 season edging the Glendale Bears 13-8 in the HWIAC division-II football championship on Thursday at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary.

The Bulldogs would build a 13-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter with two field goals coming from kicker Derek Flemming. Quarterback Owen Hinsberger would also find Joey Crouse for a short touchdown pass, with Flemming adding the convert to round out their scoring in the third quarter.

Glendale would try to mount a fourth-quarter comeback, getting on the board with just over nine minutes to play. Bears quarterback Ed Rolfe connected with Vince Patammoundy for a 30-yard strike to put the score at 6-0 and adding a safety minutes later.

Glendale would have two more opportunities to come out on top but would turn the ball over on downs with less than a minute to play to seal the victory for Sir Winston Churchill.

Churchill was the third-ranked team in Division-II football this season with a 4-2 record while Glendale ran the table on the league up until the final registering a 6-0 record.

Churchill’s last title came back in 1992-93 when they claimed a Division-III crown besting Sir John A. Macdonald 42-8. Their last appearance in a championship game was back in 2011-12 when theywere defeated by the now-closed Highland Secondary School.

In other HWDSB football action, the No. 1 ranked Sir Allan MacNab bested Saltfleet 43-7 to punch their ticket to the Division-I championship. Likewise, the Westmount Wildcats topped Westdale 39-0 to advance. The two teams will battle for the Division-I championship next Thursday (Nov. 9) at McMaster University. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm.

Featured Athlete of the Week – Anastasija Zarac – Glendale

Shortly after the school year began there was talk of a girl in grade 9 who was ‘very good’ at tennis, that girl is Anastasija Zarac.  Anastasija has been playing tennis for almost 10 years and by age 8 she was named first in Ontario in the under 10 age group.  She was undefeated in the city finals and won SOSSA without surrendering a point to her opponents.  According to Glendale’s tennis coach, Anastasija is not only a skilled player, but she is an excellent model of a student athlete as she is very coachable, she works well with her teammates, she accepts the input of others, and she always puts forth her best effort.

Aside from playing tennis, she has been involved in Tae Kwan Doe for the past 3 years, and her participation and performance in cross country, track and field, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and three-pitch earned her the honour of athlete of the year from Glen Brae.  Additionally, Anastasija was a member of the junior girls’ basketball team and plans on trying out for volleyball and badminton later this year.  Anastasija has proven herself to be an asset to girls’ sports at Glendale.

Featured Athlete of the Week – David Sprague – Waterdown

There are few better student athletes than David Sprague.  He is a competitor, a leader, an outstanding student, and a model citizen.

David was the defensive MVP and on the field defensive captain of the senior football team this year.  As a middle linebacker, he lead the team in both tackles and interceptions.  David also played tight end in key situations and was the team punter.

David has played football in each of his years at Waterdown, and has also played tennis and pickleball.   This year, he won a bronze medal at OFSAA in the high school mixed doubles tennis competition.

Academically, David has achieved a sizzling 98% average in University level courses opening up opportunities in almost any career path.  Beyond athletics and academics, David sits on the DECA executive and is a student leader for GLOW (Great Leaders of Waterdown) and will help coach Waterdown’s junior football team.  David also volunteers for Habitat for Humanity and will surpass 125 volunteer hours this year.

What sets David apart from his peers are his maturity and leadership skills.  Here is an excerpt of an email to Waterdown’s principal about David,  from a Hamilton football referee which highlights these attributes –

Ms Bielak

I would like to make you aware of a situation that occurred today where David Spragg, one of the captains of the football team, showed why he is one of the captains.

I was the Referee of today’s Waterdown and Sherwood football game.  The first half was a bit chippy and included an ejection of a Waterdown player for deliberately stepping on a Sherwood player.

Prior to the start of the second half we always meet with the captains.  David asked to speak.  Without repeating word for word what he said, he apologized to the Sherwood captains for his teammates behaviour, calling it unacceptable.  He also said that he had spoken to the rest of the team and that they were there to play football the correct way and that they were going to do that for the rest of the game.  He was good to his word.

I spoke with the coach about it after the game and he had no idea that David had taken this initiative, however he wasn’t surprised.

I have been involved in officiating amateur football and basketball at all levels for 32 years.  I can honestly say I have never had something like that happen at any game I’ve been involved with.  This one act showed a level of leadership and maturity that was more than any high school athlete has shown in any game I have been involved with.  His parents should be proud of the young man that they are raising and he will do well in his future endeavours.

 Thank you

 Kevin Mickleboro

Ashley embodies the qualities of a student athlete.  Her commitment and success in her academics parallels her commitment and success in her sport – running!  Ashley’s cross country and track coach has the following to say about her: “Ashley Lof has led the Guido cross country team for four years.  Her dedication to intense training and commitment to achieving her very best have led to some fantastic results over the years.  As a grade 12 athlete, Ashley finished second at the HWIAC meet, fifth at SOSSA, and qualified to run at OFSAA for the third year in a row.  Ashley’s competitive spirit and desire to improve each and every training session and race were an inspiration to her teammates.  She could also be counted on to support, encourage, and cheer on her fellow athletes.  Ashley has also enjoyed much success on the track, qualifying for OFSAA as a midget in the 1500m and qualifying for OFSAA Regionals as a senior in the 3000m.”

Congratulations Ashley, you are very deserving of this recognition!

Amy Stinson is a grade ten athlete who shows a dedication and work ethic much beyond her years. Her experience as a Transway basketball player has helped her earn a starting position on the senior girls basketball team since grade 9. She was an integral part of  Westdale’s recent city championship win – scoring from beyond the arc as well as driving to the basket,  and shutting down top opponents on the other team. She is also a starter for junior volleyball this year as left-side player and has already established herself as a leader, demonstrating that she is an incredible teammate and has much patience with less experienced players. Despite her busy extra-curricular schedule, her dedication to all tasks she completes carries over into the classroom where she excels in enhanced classes and challenges herself and others daily in fitness. Her drive to succeed and love of athletics are a powerful combination. Westdale is very lucky to have Amy as such an incredible role-model and we are excited to see what else she accomplishes in the future.

Featured Athlete of the Week – Thomas Matsell – Saltfleet

Thomas is truly an exceptional student athlete.  In his grade nine year he competed in five different sports.  He led his touch football team to a city championship, he played on the junior volleyball team and the grade nine rugby teams helping both to achieve great success.  He competed at OFSAA in Track and Field throwing both discuss and shot put.  An integral part of the junior basketball team, Thomas and his teammates defeated MacNab to win the city championship.  In his current grade ten year, Thomas continues to excel.  He led the junior volleyball team to an incredible season narrowly missing out on a birth in the city championship.  With the boys basketball season getting started, the Saltfleet community is excited to see what Thomas can accomplish this year. With all of his incredible accomplishments on the field and on the court, Thomas’ greatest contribution to Saltfleet continues to be his leadership, character and integrity.  If the gym needs to be set up, Thomas is there.  If his phys-ed class needs leadership, Thomas provides it.  His attitude is incredible.  He has achieved great things and in every area of Saltfleet and he makes those around him better.  We at Saltfleet look forward to the many incredible things Thomas will accomplish over the next few years.  Congratulations Thomas!

Meet Sarah Simon –  it’s hard to find her because she is one busy young lady.  Sarah is a triple threat at Sherwood – field hockey, volleyball and soccer.  She is heading to Florida for the Disney Showcase Field Hockey Tournament in January.  In her spare time she is a member of Student Council and the Sherwood Repertoire Band. Outside of school she sails and also plays rep field hockey, and when she is not doing that she is in cadets. Last time we checked there were only 24 hours in a day but Sarah manages to fill them all.  On top of all this she is a truly amazing young lady, always with a smile on her face and ready to help with anything you need.  She is the true definition of a well -rounded student athlete. Did we mention that Sarah is only in Grade 10!! Sherwood will get to keep her for a few more years and we can’t wait to see what else she can accomplish.  Congratulations Sarah!

Featured Athlete of the Week – Alyssa Hartman – Hamilton District Christian

$

Since she walked through the door, grade 11 student Alyssa Hartman was involved in athletics at Hamilton District Christian High. Alyssa is key to our basketball, volleyball and soccer programs. In grade 10 she was a part of the senior girl’s basketball team that qualified for OFSAA, and a member of two OFSAA bronze medal soccer teams in her grade 9 and 10 years. No matter what sport she plays, Alyssa shows good athletic instincts, great coachability and leads by example. This past fall, Alyssa led the senior girls basketball team in rebounds, steals, and assists while becoming the second top scorer.  She was key to the team’s full court trap, and she worked equally hard on defence as she did on offence.  As the coaches go-to defender, her work ethic shows she enjoys it. Along with her physical skills, Alyssa demonstrates the ability to think the game and can recognize opposing teams strategy changes and readily suggests effective adjustments.  Finally, Alyssa shows exceptional sportsmanship – she is not selfish, she shows care for her teammates, and she loves to celebrate others successes. It is a joy and privilege to have Alyssa as a part of HDCH Athletics, and we look forward to her contributions in the future!
